When people disconnect from their heart, they often find themselves suffering intolerable amounts of stress in the workplace, working crazy hours whilst not getting paid anywhere near their true value (although it’s important to note that people earning a lot of money doing unfulfilling work often feel just as desperate and unhappy).

A common assumption about work is that it is something that requires us to suffer in silence by gritting our teeth and keeping our heads down. For millions upon millions of people, this way of working has just become a painfully accepted part of life.

The reason why this relief is temporary is because once the mind has caught a glimmer of the bliss that can be attained through great work, life can never ever be the same. The 19th century poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best when he wrote "a mind stretched to a new idea can never go back to its original dimensions".

Another interesting dynamic that people who step backwards quickly discover is that their old strategies cease to be as effective as they used to be.

It's almost as if the universe is playing a cruel joke to prod and push them out of their comfort zones, and into the arena that can bring them the greatest sense of achievement.
